SPECIAL EVENTS

The Victim Witness Unit of the Cobb County District Attorney’s Office participates in a variety of special community events. For more information about these events, please call the reference numbers listed below or the Victim Witness Office at 770/528-3047.

Victims Rights Week: held each year in April, this week is set aside to honor, remember, and recognize victims of crime. Events to commemorate this special week vary from year to year and community to community but include activities such as a Victims Resource Arena, where citizens can learn more about what services are available in their community, or a Candlelight Vigil remembering those victims who were killed due to criminal acts. The Victims Rights Arena is sponsored by the Victim Witness Unit while the Candlelight Vigil is generally sponsored by the Crime Victims’ Advocacy Council who can be reached at 770/333-9254.

PROVE IT Program: held periodically throughout the year. This program is a joint effort between the Victim Witness Unit and the Georgia State Board of Pardons and Paroles to educate victims of cases where defendants have been sentenced to time to serve in the State Prison System about the parole process. Any victim of an inmate currently serving time in the Georgia State Prison System is eligible to attend these meetings. Domestic Violence Awareness Month: held each year in October, this month is set aside to honor, remember, and recognize victims and survivors of crimes of domestic violence. The Cobb County Domestic Violence Task force is the local organization who plans the calendar of activities scheduled for this month. Activities usually include a Candlelight Vigil to remember victims who have dies from domestic violence incidents, a "Take Back the Night March" to show support to victims of sexual assault, specialized training for prosecutors on working with domestic violence crimes and victims, a recognition luncheon to honor those in our community who have made a difference in domestic violence issues, and wide variety of speaking engagements to educate the community about domestic violence issues. This past year, for the first time ever in Cobb County, the community joined together on Saturday, October 9, 1999 to participate in the First Annual Run for Hope, a 5K road race to benefit the Battered Women’s Shelter and increase awareness about domestic violence. Child Abuse Prevention Month: held each year in April, this month is set aside to honor, recognize, and remember victims of child abuse, and to increase awareness of child abuse issues. Activities vary from year to year.

Public Speaking / Crime Prevention Programs: Staff of the Victim Witness Unit are available to speak or sponsor crime prevention programs throughout the community.
