On November 3, 2003 at approximately 12:39 p.m., Humphreys entered the model home sales office of Morrison Homes located in West Cobb County. Within three minutes he had the bank card of his first victim, a real estate agent, Cynthia Williams and was on the phone to her bank verifying the P.I.N. for her card. During the next 22 minutes, he had his victim strip naked, strangled her with her own underwear and shot her once in the back and once in the head. He left her body hidden behind and partially under a desk in the office. Real Estate agent Lori Brown came in before Humphreys was able to leave. He made her give him her bank card, had her remove all of her clothes He also called her bank to verify her P.I.N. number and then he shot her in the back of the head. During the evening hours, he was able to withdraw money from both banks.
When the police started closing in on the defendant he rented a Jeep Cherokee and started his run. The US Marshal service was able to track him, and when he reached Wisconsin, he engaged law enforcement there on a 35 mile chase with speeds exceeding 110 miles per hour. The officers were eventually able to stop his Jeep and he was returned to Georgia to stand trial. The jury convicted him of two counts of malice murder, two counts of felony murder, two counts of kidnapping with bodily injury, two counts of aggravated assault and two counts of armed robbery. On September 30, 2007 in the punishment phase of the trial, the jury returned a verdict of DEATH.
